SAMPLE RESUME – Career Change and Re-entering the Workforce

The example here is a sample resume of an event planner who is a re-entrant to the job market (with an employment gap in her resume and a career change in plans)  in career transition from a teaching job to an event planner.

Learn from this resume how you can use your volunteering experience to add to your skills and present a resume in a functional form.

Note also that in this sample resume the applicant is open to full-time or part-time contract position; flexibility is important when reentering the workforce after a long gap. A Part-time Job with Full-time Income – The Possibilities

Who all are looking for part-time jobs?

  • Teenagers
  • College Students
  • Retirees
  • Young Mothers
  • People with Medical Problems or Disabilities
  • Single Parents in Need of More Cash – A Second Job
  • Someone in Search for a Good Life-Work Balance

Why do you want to Work Part-time?

A Teenager looking for a Summer Job

  • Summer vacation is close by and I need a part-time job which pays me well and also gives me a chance to further my creative talents.
  • I just need a part-time job to get through my college loans, willing to work up to 10 hours a week.

What does a Stay-at-Home Mom say?
If you are a stay-at-home thinking of getting back in the job market what would you prefer — full-time employment or working only part-time? It is no dispute that working part-time brings many advantages to a working mother’s life -work balance act. Here are the top 5 reasons why women prefer working part-time when re-entering the workforce:

  • I can have more energy and less stressed in the evening after a 5-6 hours work day. Evenings are not just the time spent on getting ready for the next work day, but more to be lived in the moment.
  • I am spending less money on general daycare expenses and after school programs for kids
  • I can have more time to enjoy with kids and in helping them with their homework or just finding time to interact with them
  • I can have more “me-time”, even before picking up kids from school; you may find time for that half-hour pedicure / manicure or a quick shopping trip without the kids in tow!
  • A satisfying feeling of self-accomplishment and outlet to creativity through work as compared to being a full-time stay-at-home mother

If not one the above, what would be some of your own personal reasons for wanting to work part-time?

Where to Search for Part-time Jobs?

Resources
The internet is a great resource for searching for the part-time jobs, here are some useful site which talk about where and how to search for the part-time jobs.

  • About.com has great resources for searching for the part-time jobs and also advice on how to go about the job hunt
  • A Careerbuilder.com article that has some very interesting listing on jobs that are fun and could be considered non-traditional and pays a lot more than you think
  • Craigslist offers current local listings which might interest you
  • Look for jobs at non-profit organizations which also offer part-time and other paid and volunteer job options. One such online resource: http://www.bridgestar.org/
  • Looking for a job that offers good benefits and flexible schedules, contract work options? Perhaps a government job might suit you. You can search here: http://usajobs.opm.gov/
  • Part-time Jobs for Teenagers, also look for your campus job listings online or career fairs
  • Sologig.com for freelancers and contracting jobs
  • BLS website

Some Suggestions
I would suggest you to search online (use Google, Yahoo or your own favorite search engine or job board) for the job titles that interest you on internet and also look up the BLS website to know more about the job requirements and descriptions. Once you do your complete research you will know for sure whether that job or career is the one that appeals to you the most.

Also you might perform some career self-assessments available online to find out the right match.

Another option to part-time jobs is participating in some paying online programs which can help supplement some income. You could think about working 3-4 hours from home on your computer and you can make some supplemental income if not to sustain a family completely. But hey, if you get good at something there is no stopping a decent income flow through some flexible and reliable online programs.

It is not difficult to find the right part-time job that gives you a good income as well, all depends on where you are looking and how you approach the search process and don’t hesitate to ask others (for example career coaches and career experts) who are in related fields for advice and suggestions.

Best Wishes on your part-time Job hunt!

Career Options for Baby Boomers or Post-Retirement

According to the Thomas C. Nelson, Chief Operating Officer, AARP (2006), by 2012 nearly 20 percent of the U.S. workforce will be age 55 or older, up from 14 percent in 2002.
As the baby boom(er) generation nears retirement age, and the generations coming after are considerably smaller, analysts are predicting labor shortages in many industries. Healthcare and government are among those that will be hit the hardest.

Some work/career options for either those heading for retirement and want to continue working in a different area of interest or those post-retirement now looking forward to rejoin the workforce:

  • Back in a job with similar job description as you have been in before
  • Using your newly acquired skills to re-invent yourself
  • Home-based business
  • Buying a franchise business
  • Being an infopreneur or taking-up writing as a career
  • Teaching / tutoring
  • Working for a non-profit

The nonprofit workforce now makes up 10.5% of U.S. jobs, according to a study by the Nonprofit Employment Data Project at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore.

But don’t let these suggestions keep you away from dreaming and realizing your dream of a high flying job in the corporate world, consider the case of 50-year-old Brenda Barnes who was named CEO of Sara Lee Corp. in 2004 after taking a six-year hiatus from a full-time corporate job.

Tips to Re-enter the Workforce

  • Network with young employees in the field of work you are interested in, it is through them you can learn to think the way the current workforce functions. You may after all find out that the basic work techniques have not changed at all, the new work culture may be more informal than what you have experienced before but knowing how to be formal is advantageous over knowing how not to be!
At times we make a strong opinion on the new generation and notice more what they are not doing right. It is essential to get out of a rigid frame of mind and be more accepting and respectful to change. Constant resistance is our denial to change, but change is inevitable. There is always something to learn from the different generations, more interaction and better communication is the key to bridge these gaps and leads to a common appreciation and learning. We must keep on learning – your emphasis should be towards keeping a youthful mind and an agile body.
The more interaction you have with the younger generation the more they will learn from you and you from them, it is the key for keeping your mind young forever.
  • To change with the world, first you must be ready to change yourself and be ready to unlearn what you have strong opinions on. Research and adapt the new technologies in use in the industry of your choice.
  • Be open-minded to new courses and learning in your field. It shows your acceptance and adaptable nature to the present work culture.
  • Be ready to take on challenges, let age not be a barrier towards starting a new venture or consider going back to the college.

Make Money Fast Online, Internet Marketing and Surveys – Scam or Genuine

Are you lured by the numerous email offers you get these days to make money fast on the Internet and taking online surveys from home to earn a 4 figure income per month? If you want to explore more on this topic then this post is for you.

Internet Marketing – Get Rich Fast Websites
As an incentive you would make money initially to lure you into the system, but there is a large possibility that whatever you had made would be lost by continual usage and more so they would take more money to try a system out. Some of these Internet companies ask for around $200 to $2000 or more to “train” for making money fast or just for joining in the program. The information they ask when doing so is your name, email address and maybe your home address (possibly the reason for more spam emails in your inbox).

Whether you make money fast or not these Internet sites which offer you a too good to be true deals sure are making money fast on your cost.
Since most of the surveys and fast money making websites are scams it is hard to identify the authentic ones. One way to figure out the ones that will truly put some cash in your pocket is to ask your friends or question around in an online forum discussion for references. Research well and make sure you are not in the list of those duped by these Internet sites.

Online Surveys
Some surveys do pay you online for the surveys but that is in return to the lot of time you spend you on the computer. The examples that you see online of getting rich fast and how some are making $1000 a day taking online surveys may be true but most of the time this income is not coming from one source, it is through multiple resources and after spending a multitude of time and most of them do require you pay upfront to join their services.

However one website online which I found pretty interesting in a way that it could be making money online fast by selling an eBook for around $40 on get rich fast scams ‘revealed’! Interesting idea and can sure earn big bucks of millions around the world are searching for how to make money on the Internet and want to avoid the scams!

Entrepreneurship for Baby Boomers or Post Retirement

Baby Boomers as Entrepreneurs
According to Going Your Own Way, an article in USnews.com a CGC analysis of government data shows that those 55 to 64 and older represent one of the fastest-growing groups of self-employed workers. Some 1.8 million American workers ages 55 to 64 are self-employed outside of agriculture, up 29 percent from 2000, according to the Labor Department. The number of do-it-yourselfers 65 and older has grown 18 percent to 756,000. And boomers 45 to 54 years old make up more than a quarter of the nation’s 9.6 million self-employed. Overall, boomers and older entrepreneurs now account for 54 percent of self-employed workers, up from 48.5 percent in 2000.

You are never too old to learn and you are never too old to be on your own. That counts for starting a new business or being your own boss post-retirement. The key to success is to think and act practically and stay away from those who send negatives vibes, are sources of continuous discouragement or are those who ask you to be too cautious or even stay away from an “adventure” or a venture that might be too much for you. You must decide for yourself – you know best of what you are capable of and how you want your future to be.
Also this could be the time to live you passion, if you had in mind ever before to be an independent worker then post-retirement could be the time to live your entrepreneurial dreams.

Some tips to start now:

  • When thinking about starting a new business, take time to research about the business license and permits that you might require to launch your own business.
  • Make a plan on what the expected legal liabilities and tax implications could be for this new business. Hire an attorney if you find the legalities complex and time consuming.
  • Investment Capital- How much are you ready to invest and how much can you generate through other resources? Learn the basics of money management before you step into new territories.
  • If you are thinking of starting a new Internet based business, beware of the scams and identity thefts that go around. Try to investigate and identify those who are known in the business or those who provide you with enough evidence of their valid licenses and existence. A good background check can save you a lot of trouble. Don’t be influenced by easy money on the Internet, if it is too good to be true it is most probably a scam!
  • Research online and read books on entrepreneurship and find mentors or experts who can help you in directing you towards being a successful entrepreneur.
  • A franchise could be another viable option but be cautious on the investment requirement and the time commitment.

More tips that are relevant for anyone stepping into entrepreneurial dreams are at Entrepreneurship for Women Re-entering Workforce.

Some of the tips above may sound daunting but when you go step by step the dream of launching your own enterprise becomes a reality. You can never be too prepared and must never underestimate the importance of planning when starting a new venture.

Strengthening the Pillars of Self-Confidence on the Comeback Path

In a previous post (Women Need Support to Reenter the Workforce) someone had rightly commented that when reentering the workforce the woman faces the major roadblock of conquering her shaken self-confidence. The doubts and fear of whether she would be able to do it again or with the large career gap is she capable of entering the workforce with confidence. On this topic the importance of positive thinking and attitude cannot be overstressed. The first step towards self-confidence is to believe in yourself.

There is no secret to success. It just needs to be re-discovered. The answer lies within you, how positive can you be towards the action? How motivated can you be to take that action into a real step? How persistent can you be to achieve what you want?

For all of the above to happen you have to have confidence in yourself, a belief in yourself that you can do it. Once you get over the hurdle that is you, the forces around you will come together to assist you towards achieving your goals.

Answer these questions honestly:

  • Why are you stressed? What do you fear?
  • Why are you feeling it? Is it because of lack of self-confidence or your circumstances?
  • What can make you rise above the overwhelming pull of stress / negative emotions?
  • How can you overcome them? Can it be true that you have just created such an environment for yourself?
  • What happens if you drop that negative emotion right now and let only the positives stay with you?
  • Can you do all such things today that make you feel good?

Focus your energy to the positive spectrum and feel good about yourself. Often we are too critical about ourselves and tend to focus on what is not working, what if we shift our perspective to all that is working right?
To be successful you have to have the perception of being successful. The positive energy is much more infectious than a negative one. Engulf yourself in positive emotions and you can conquer the negative energies.

“While the positive state of mind governed by positive emotions can do wonders in realizing one’s aspirations and goals, the negative frame of mind, harshly controlled by negative emotions, can cause havoc and destabilize, dislocate and demoralize a person to unimaginably lowly depths. Positive thinking and high morale can lead one to incredible heights of achievements and success, low morale and pessimistic outlook can drive people to ignoble defeats and tragic failure.”

Always remember that you must feel within yourself and have the self-confidence to have been a person with good life balance. You have been there for your kids or family when they needed you the most and were dependent on you. Your sacrifice or decision to be with them rather than at an office should instill within you the confidence you need to exude during the interview or even before – while making a job search or career transition plan.

You have to think on these terms;

  • I have to know what I truly want. I will invest my time now to work towards finding my dream career or job.
  • I will spare this time every day for the next few days or until I find out what satisfies me the most.
  • I will talk about my future plans with my family, friends and see how viable it seems. Perhaps they have some related suggestions.
  • I will have complete confidence in myself and my abilities; I will focus more on my strengths and plan on how to strengthen them further. My strengths will overpower my shortcomings.
  • I will persist with faith and confidence.

The thing always happens that you really believe in; and the belief in a thing makes it happen.

How to be Optimistic during the Job Search Process

  1. Build a Support System
Being in a job search for long can be mentally draining and physically taxing, seek support in friends, family or professional help and support with career coaches or counselors.
  2. Volunteer – Do Something you Like/Love
If the job search is taking long or you anticipate many months before you land another job offer either because of starting a new career or because of fewer jobs during recession, take on a part-time volunteer work in areas which you are passionate about or plan to take on as a career later on. Even this experience must be added to your resume for the present job search.
  3. Be Inspired, Remain Motivated
Read inspirational books and listen to motivating speeches or words of wisdom of the leaders and movers and shakers of the world. Sometimes even a few words of inspiration can inject enthusiasm and motivate us to effective action.
  4. Define Goals – Be Practical
Being optimistic does not mean sending out 100 resumes online and waiting optimistically to get an interview call. Be practical and set practical and SMART goals for yourself.
For the mind to remain motivated the body should be in tandem. Practice meditation and relaxation techniques when feeling flustered or lost in the job search process. Exercise, go out in the fresh air and walk, do something different now and then else the routine can get you down.
  5. Meet Friends – Network
DO NOT shut yourself off to social outings and gatherings. Agreed, you are not in the best of your mental elation these days, but shying away from friends either from the fear of sympathy or other emotions will only distance you from a very important aspect of the job search process – networking. Meet friends, neighbors, family in gatherings or on usual social visits. You never know when a job lead might come your way. But most importantly, not for mere networking, it is very important to have a close network of individuals with whom you can just chat and share your apprehensions or just to get the tension out of your head.
  6. Practice Positive Affirmations
Often the most off-putting emotions or negativism comes from within. Do not focus on your past failures or regrets. Practice optimism – write self-affirming statements that present a visualization of a successful you. What have you done in past that was praised and something that you are truly proud of? When was the last time you felt really happy? What things in your life at present make you smile? Envision yourself successful and happy and imagine yourself walking towards your goals. “Make the most of every failure. Fall forward.” Read some more tips at: Reduce Stress and Improve Your Life with Positive Self Talk.

Become a possibilitarian. No matter how dark things seem to be or actually are, raise your sights and see possibilities – always see them, for they’re always there.

Women Need Support to Reenter the Workforce – This is a Demand and Requirement for a well Balanced Society

15,000 women marched through New York City in 1908 demanding shorter hours, better pay and voting rights. On this International Women’s Day, 100 years later, still the working woman is struggling for a good work-life balance. Shorter hours or flexible work schedule presents the most conducive working environment for a working mother, especially those with young kids. The fight for the right to work flexible hours continues even now with a hope that the employers and the government will one day get on to this demand and shorter work hours, part-time work and re-entering the workforce would not be as much as a struggle for the working woman as it is now.

On the Path from being a Stay-at-home Mom to a Working Mother
Children need undivided attention and the family needs time dedication and nurturing that a woman brings to a home. If the mothers who intend on re-entering the workforce do not have the right of choice to work in balanced life-work workplace environment, we are eventually weakening the very basis of a family structure and the future – our children.

In a choice to join work after motherhood, many women would choose to be stay at home moms and sacrifice their careers to bring up their kids; but for many of them it is not a choice, with the main source of income generating through them and the pressures of a higher standards of living in bigger cities it is not possible to survive and save in one income only. With no choice women have to choose working over spending more time with kids. Would that scenario change if women had a right to part-time work and flexible working hours schedule?

With a career to nurture and sparing time for kids at home is an ideal situation for a family which seeks balance in financial matters and personal well-being. The mother also finds herself satisfied with a career and the quality time that she wants with her family. It is not an easy task managing both home and work, but at least a flexible schedule frees away the tension and guilt that a mother undergoes of having her young cared by institutions or nannies who cannot contribute to a complete development of a child.

Again it is not a question and struggle of having it all, it is a question of managing it all in the best possible way whatever you have. Happiness is not in having it all, it lies in enjoying what you have. Time has a terrible habit of flying off faster than you anticipate, what would work best for you trying everyday to hold on to every hour or a minute or hoping you had an extra hour each day or watching it pass as you find time to enjoy with your child and family and also finding time to pursue your interests which defines you or completes you?

The global workforce is full of workaholics; we are always short of time. Short of time to get work done, short of time to spend time with the family and short of time to see time pass by. Time has been whizzing past us for many years now, we desperately try to hold on to time and try to read books on time management when we find time.

Two salaried families are common and in bigger cities of the country it is essential for survival. With so much time pressure and both spouses working full-time the major pressure is felt in the family life while juggling a career and a family. In this struggle the woman faces the major brunt of the situation where she is still the caretaker of the family with additional career pressures. It becomes a necessity for the mother to support family aspirations or comfortable survival by contributing to the financial health of the family. And more so a requirement for the single working mother.

Re-entering the Job Market
Re-entry process is usually tough and may take somewhere from 3 months to more than a couple of years it all depends on your skills, preparations and interests.

There is a need to facilitate special programs to enable women re-enter the workforce, they have taken time off to mould our future generation and it is the responsibility of the society, government and private employers to take on the task to enable a smooth re-entry process for the skilled moms with a work experience gap in their resume.

If the re-entry to the job market was easy enough would:

  • More women opt out of the workforce after motherhood?
  • Would fewer women delay childbirth only because it is an impediment to their careers?

We need more family friendly work arrangements and through the government is rising the demands, more needs to be done locally and globally to help working women manage their families and careers effectively and contributing to the guiltless bringing up of their children.

The Demand for a Flexible Work Schedules for Young Parents

The choice to work flexible working hours must be a right, for a male or female, if a family has a child less than 5 years of age or is disabled, the time has come for the government and business policy makers to make a move in the 21st century making flexible hours a right for all workers. Be it in the US or globally, this step is required to encourage women to not opt-out of the workforce but manage work and family with the right balance. The policy can be extended to the post-retirement generation who is able and eager to contribute to the workforce. The question to the right to flexible policies however becomes complex when the manufacturing business sector it to be considered, with most of the working hours in shifts is it possible to incorporate such an idea in the areas where physical presence and hands-on operations are required 24/7?

The various business sectors must recognize that by supporting this right, they are helping themselves retain good employees and be a role model for the much required work-life balance.

Entrepreneurship for Women Re-entering Workforce

Why being self-employed could work for you now more than ever before?

With work experience not featuring in your resume, or your resume highlights a conspicuous gap from when you last had a full-time job, it is time to think of a new career move. Often starting a small scale business could be a viable possibility for women or baby boomers re-entering the workforce.

But just dreaming of starting your business does not make you an entrepreneur; it takes a lot to make your dream a reality.

Before arriving at the conclusion that a small scale or a large scale business would be ideal for you, you must come to terms that something has to give; entrepreneurship may demand more of your time and energy and than a regular flex-time job offer. You have to understand the pros and cons of being self-employed before taking the plunge.

Find out if entrepreneurship is for you.

Be open to possibilities and the possibilities will open to you. As a re-entrant you are the crossroads to re-evaluate your future career direction. It is also a time to analyze if you can do what you are truly passionate about. Knowing what you want gives the true empowerment and confidence in heading towards your dreams. When you know what you want, apprehension dissolves into confidence.

Personality, Skills, Work Style – All Matter

Entrepreneurial personality is essential for those who plan to work from home, when you are self-employed you have to set your priorities and learn to develop this habit, you have to develop a vision of success and plan your day to day agenda towards your success.

Focus towards your goal, focus and self-direction would come by conditioning yourself to an entrepreneurial personality. At times you have the self-motivating drive and at times you have to learn to cultivate in you either through help of a professional or through self-training.

You must take time to learn the business skills, your desire to succeed and self-motivation may be there but unless you make efforts to learn the business skills your arrival to your success station could take longer and the road could be rougher. You have to make efforts to learn how to run the business, how do business owners get the know how to pricing, marketing and sales and other aspects right from building your marketing plan to getting your product to the customer. It is a skill that be acquired and with the current mindset and eagerness to learn you may well be on your way with some guidance and learning.

Plan Ahead – Save for the Rainy Days

If you are a single working mother you have to consider your finances first, usually for around 6 months to a year you might not see much revenue flowing in your business (though this is a general comment and you ability and the type of business determines the revenue outcomes considerably).

Have you made a financial analysis of your present situation?

Research well and take time to know about what it truly means to start a business.

Research Well – Some Resources you MUST Visit

Take your time to plan and research before you jump in. Remember that you plan to fail if you fail to plan. (most of these resources are US based). Here are some websites which offer great advice on just about all questions that you might have now on starting your own business:

  • The U.S. Small Business Administration website provides a wealth of information for someone considering starting a new business. Go to SBA’s website at http://www.sba.gov/, and then go through the steps the “Small Business Planner” provides.
  • One of my most notable experiences as an entrepreneur came through a free counseling session from the Service Corps of Retired Executives (SCORE). For more information on how to use SCORE’s services, visit its web site at http://www.score.org/ or call 800-634-0245.
  • The Census Bureau. “Taking Care of Business: A Guide to Census Bureau Data for Small Businesses” explains how to access and use the data offered by the Bureau. It also includes a listing of State Data Centers (SDCs) and Business and Industry Data Centers (BIDCs), which offer access to computers and other databases at no charge. Contact: Customer Service Branch, Bureau of the Census, Washington, DC 20233.
  • National Association of Women Business Owners (NAWBO) provides access to valuable tools and resources to help propel growth and success for women-owned businesses.
