Checklist – What you must do before you Quit

All set to resign from your present job? Make the transition smooth by knowing what you must do before you quit.

Here’s a checklist on what to do in the last week of your employment. (However you must consult your HR department or your manager first to find out if the company has written policies / separation guidelines).

The following is the general protocol to follow when you’ve made the decision to call it quits:

  • Submit letter of resignation in written (hard copy) or through Email (or both). Consult your manager or HR personnel to find out the formal process that your company follows. Add effective date which usually is two week minimum. Make sure that this date is agreed upon by your supervisor. If circumstances be such that you do not wish to inform your boss, giving a 2 week notice is usually the norm. You must also request an agreement in writing from your boss – confirming he has received and agrees to the resignation request and process hereafter.
  • Submit all corporate documents, software and machines (computer, additional hard disk etc.). These will be required for a formal sign off. Contact the IT department to know till when you can use use computer/laptop and other equipment. This is also the right time to transfer and back-up our personal documents that reside on official computers. Keep in mind that the proprietary material must not be copied or taken home.
  • Shred all confidential papers (copies) that might be lying around and which you no longer need. If there are some other official documents and books that can/must be returned to your supervisor, library or HR; do so now. Request receipts or online check-off for all returns.
  • Contact the benefits office or your HR department to know about post-employment benefits. You may be eligible for unemployment insurance, find out more about it from your HR personnel.
  • Check if you have filled in your expense report, now is the time to verify and submit balances.
  • Check your time card. Are there any vacation payouts that you can request? You are usually paid for any accumulated vacation leave earned through your last day at work. Usually this is well taken care of by the HR department but doesn’t harm to double check.
  • Request the HR to place a forwarding message at your official phone number or email, if you want to. They might also add information on who could be contacted once you are not on job.
  • Any credit cards or official vehicles you have been using must be turned.
  • Return any parking gate cards or permits.

Other than these items on the checklist you might also be worried about your 401(K). What happens to my 401(K) when I leave my job? There is some good information around which you can refer to and it’s worth every minute spent on the research – so do it well. Here are some good tips on this topic:

Losing healthcare benefits (if you avail through your company) is also a major cause of concern. Get good tips at the dol.gov website about what you must know about health coverage for you and your family if you lose your job or quit.

How to use your Experiences and Transferable Skills in your Resume

March 8th is the 101st celebration of International Women’s Day (http://www.internationalwomensday.com).  Each year, thousands of events occur around the world to mark the economic, political and social achievements of women.

For female job seekers who have been out of the paid workforce for a period of time –  yet have been performing valuable, non-paid work — this special day may cause confusion. Despite the gains women have achieved in the world of work, many employers reject valuable volunteer and extra-curricular activities that impart women’s diverse, multi-dimensional backgrounds.

Ford R. Myers, Career Coach, Speaker and Author of “Get The Job You Want, Even When No One’s Hiring,” (John Wiley & Sons, http://www.getthejobbook.com) encourages job seekers to “think outside the box” and draw on a variety of past experiences, in both paid and non-paid positions, when applying for new employment.  These “transferable skills,” acquired during any activity – volunteer positions, classes, projects, parenting, hobbies, sports – can be applicable to one’s next job.  By adding transferable skills to a resume, employers get a better understanding and broader picture of whom they are hiring – as well as the interests, values and experiences that the candidate brings to the table.

Myers uses the example of an attorney who does not wish to continue practicing law. “Attorneys perform research, write briefs, do counseling, and develop new business ideas with clients – skills that can be used in a variety of work settings, not just the law.”

Myers notes that transferable skills can be divided into five broad skill areas:

1.  Communication:

writes clearly and concisely, speaks effectively, listens attentively, openly expresses ideas, negotiates/resolves differences, leads group discussions, provides feedback, persuades others, provides well-thought out solutions, gathers appropriate information, confidently speaks in public

2.  Interpersonal Skills:

works well with others, sensitive, supportive, motivates others, shares credit, counsels, cooperates, delegates effectively, represents others, understands feelings, self-confident, accepts responsibility

3.  Research and Planning:

forecasts/predicts, creates ideas, identifies problems, meets goals, identifies resources, gathers information, solves problems, defines needs, analyzes issues, develops strategies, assesses situations

4.  Organizational Skills:

handles details, coordinates tasks, punctual, manages projects effectively, meets deadlines, sets goals, keeps control over budget, plans and arranges activities, multi-tasks

5.  Management Skills:

leads groups, teaches/trains/instructs, counsels/coaches, manages conflict, delegates responsibility, makes decisions, directs others, implements decisions, enforces policies, takes charge

“My hope is that this International Women’s Day will encourage female job seekers to really think about the professional skills they’ve developed in all the facets of their lives, not just from years of on-the-job experience,” adds Myers.

Business Acumen – Seeing the Big Picture to Build Your Credibility, Career, and Company

What is business acumen?

Business acumen is keen, fundamental, street smart insight into how your business operates and how it makes money and sustains profitable growth, now and in the future.

Developing business acumen helps us cut through the complexity, get a bird’s eye view of a business and understand our specialized roles within it.

Kevin Cope’s new book, SEEING THE BIG PICTURE:  Business Acumen to Build Your Credibility, Career, and Company (Greenleaf Book Group Press, March 2012) enables everyone, business leaders and employees alike to build more profitable companies. A must read if you seek success at your business.

This is a must-have reference book for all entrepreneurs – a meaningful and helpful educational material which eventually becomes a valuable resource – to be referred to now and many times over. You’ll find valuable insights throughout the book in well cited examples on how the now successful companies have used opportunities and efficient vision to their competitive advantage.

The basics or the foundation of building a company are always the same, more or less – the success factors however depend on how you use your business acumen to ensure sustainable growth. Are you among the knowledgeable, diligent and insightful few who are aware of the key strategies to create a sustainable organization – by seeing the bigger picture?

“Cash is the fuel that drives a business.  Without cash, a business can’t pay its bills, can’t pay its employees, can’t buy the goods it needs to produce the products or services it sells…. Companies that have strong cash positions, good profit margins, and asset strength have the foundation to support growth both in the short-term and long-term.”

The book enlightens us through a series of examples on how fortune 500 companies and other organizations with amazing progressive culture have taken the leaps to success, building a sustainable brand and customer loyalty. Your business acumen truly enables you to have an edge above the “also-ran” and “launched-but-never-really-took-off” few. And not only entrepreneurs; any CEO, manager or employee can use this know-how to help build a financially strong and culturally sound workplace.

If you and your company understand the importance of the 5 Key Drivers – cash, profit, assets, growth, and people – you know that you have a strong foothold even in a stormy recession. This book can help everyone, from the factory floor to the executive suite, grasp the big picture:  how these five drivers interact to build great companies. In SEEING THE BIG PICTURE, Cope not only explains how these drivers operate, but how they work together and are impacted by everyone in the organization.

“The balance sheet is a financial snapshot taken at the end of a month, quarter, or fiscal year. Everything you do to impact cash, profits, and assets influences your balance sheet.”

Part 2 of the book is dedicated to simplifying the financial statements through the 5 drivers. I’ve never been enlightened better on seeing the big picture of the financials before than I did through this book. Covering the basics and details of a company’s financials – this book proves to be an essential learning tool which you perhaps missed out at school – this sure is an MBA in less than 180 pages!

“Remember, growth is the key.” – Kevin Cope in Seeing the Big Picture

How are you growing?

Career as a Certified Nursing Assistant

Becoming a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) can be a great start to a career in nursing, especially if you want to find out whether nursing is right for you. Here are the basics you should know about a career as a CNA.

Education

All you need to do to become a CNA is complete a training program, which generally lasts between four and six weeks. There are a number of programs available through local colleges, online colleges, medical centers, and even the American Red Cross. Since these programs don’t take long to complete, they don’t cost nearly as much as a full college degree. You can even get financial aid through many programs. After the training program, you must also pass a state licensing exam that tests your knowledge and skills.

Often even the entry level jobs require certification as a Nurse Assistant by the State as well as CPR certification. However for some part-time entry level positions only High School diploma or equivalent might be required.

Job Responsibilities

CNAs work in hospitals and nursing homes providing basic care to patients who cannot properly care for themselves. Patients may be elderly, chronically sick, or in rehabilitation. CNAs usually work under the supervision of Registered Nurses (RNs), which gives them an opportunity to see what a nursing career might entail.

Everyday duties may include administering medication, taking note of patient behavior and symptoms, cleaning patient areas, dressing bandages, and helping with patients’ personal hygiene.

Average Salary

It’s more common for CNAs to receive hourly pay than a salary, so your pay depends on how many hours you work.  Those who work full time can typically earn between $25,000 and $30,000 per year.

Note: For part-time jobs salary is flexible and some organizations may offer you extra incentives or pay for working weekends. Usually the work entails around 8 or 12 hour shifts; includes some weekends and holidays.

Advanced Career Opportunities

If your job as a CNA inspires you to move up in the nursing field, there are many opportunities available to you. With one year of training, you can become a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN). An LPN does many of the same things as CNA, but you will be able to work in other settings like private clinics and earn a higher salary. To become a Registered Nurse (RN), you will need two to four years of training, but this will greatly expand your nursing responsibilities and salary. Many RN programs have accelerated options for students with previous experience as a CNA or LPN as well. You may even consider getting your master’s degree down the road, which will allow you to become a nurse practitioner, midwife, clinical nurse specialist, or a nurse anesthetist. As you can see, a job as a CNA is just the beginning of an exciting career in nursing!

Is the Schedule Challenging / Demanding?

It sure can be since you might be required to be physically fit to take care of others. You might be performing lifting, pushing, pulling and continuous standing or sitting at your job. Also you might be exposed to infections daily. But appropriate training and regular hygiene and precautions can make this a very satisfying career for an individual who values helping others and wants to carry forth a career or giving.

Tactics for Multilingual Job Seekers

If you are multilingual then you can consider yourself to be in an advantageous position. I know this because I speak the Dutch, German and English language fluently and I believe that this has helped me with my job search significantly. I used these three languages as my unique selling point and am convinced that you should do this as well, if you aren’t doing it yet. Here are a few tactics that can help you find your dream job, using your multilingualism as a differentiating factor.

Please note that this post is mostly relating to job seekers that are looking for marketing jobs.

Prove it!

It is really important that you include your language proficiencies on your CV and most us you have done this already. What many job seekers forget is that it seems a lot more credible when you have an actual certificate in the language you speak. When I went on a job interview I was being tested afterwards because the lady who interviewed me was German, and asked me ad hoc in German “So we can speak in German now as well”? I was able to respond quickly, but it did come sudden and it was clearly a test. In order to avoid these uncomfortable situations, I would highly recommend you to consider English exams because it simply creates more credibility.

Show it!

You need to show your language abilities everywhere on the internet, because after all, it is all about promoting yourself and your online brand. This means that you not only have to include it on your LinkedIn profile, but also on your Twitter and Facebook account. For Twitter it is especially important because through this, you will create more followers as you are tweeting in several languages. This will, in turn, give a good impression and shows that you are putting an effort into your social media usage.

Besides this, it would also be recommendable to start a blog in the different languages you speak. Not only will it get your name out there which again, is positive for your reputation as a job seeker, but you can also enhance your en maintain your level of proficiency in that particular language.

Say it!

Video blogging has become very popular and I therefore would strongly suggest you to start this if you are thinking of setting up a blog. I mentioned earlier that you need prove of your language abilities, making videos would obviously be the ultimate prove. It has also been said that by the use of video’s you attract more visitors to your blog, which in turn would increase your popularity and makes you an attractive candidate from a recruiters perspective.

Network!

The last point that I would like to share with you, and I believe this could significantly help you, is guest blogging. Guest blogging allows you to really get your name out there but most importantly, it allows you to expand your network. I would start looking for sites, preferably company sites that allow guest posts, and create a relationship with them. This will naturally increase the number of connections you have on your LinkedIn account and if you amend your settings to allow the public to see your connections, recruiters can view your connections too. If you have an established network behind you, i.e. someone with over 200 connections, you would be more attractive as opposed to having less than 100 connections.

I hope that these tips have been helpful for those who are seeking marketing jobs and speak more than one language.

To use your time optimally it is to your advantage to know which job search websites offer the best job search assistance. Here’s a list which genuinely takes you step by step from the prep and launch of your job search to the ‘high-fives’ and ‘now-what’ stage:

Step 1: Job Search Preparation – Includes Resume Writing, Cover Letter Tips

Monster.com – is a well known job board but over the years it has done a great job in adding valuable job search tips/articles which help new grads to retirees re-entering the workforce. Use this website to write/re-write your resume, look up some cool cover letter samples and other job search relevant tips specifically for the new grads.

Though there are resume-writing apps, but it would be best to prepare a custom resume and cover letter for every job you apply (hard when you think about it but better results for sure).

Step 2: Research Companies and People to add to your Network

LinkedIn – If you are not on LinkedIn then it’s the right time to be on it. Employers and recruiters today are scanning the LinkedIn profiles even more than before short-listing the candidate list. You can also use LinkedIn to prepare your resume, find recent and relevant job openings, and of course network with ease.

Lindsey Pollak Blog – Being on LinkedIn would not mean much if you don’t know how to present yourself as the most suitable candidate. Can your profile attract CEOs, recruiters or hiring managers? Alison Doyle has been helping many job seekers for years now and some advice which is relevant for any job seeker in any generation is as much valid for a new grad. The only downside is that you the hundreds of links on one page itself – it’s easy to get lost – or spend hours just soaking in the valuable advice. Worth every minute of your time if you want to be a pro at your next interview. There’s this one webpage – Interviewquest – which is a treasure chest for interview preparation.

Interview App for iPhone / iPadMonster.com Interviews by Monster Worldwide offers this app to ace any job interview. You can use this app to prepare, access expert advice, and follow-up with a complete post-interview guide.

Step 6: Post Job Offer Negotiations

Texas A&M Univ Career Services – Though you’ll find many websites which offer salary negotiation steps and tips, but this website offers some very apt advice for the recent grads; you’ll find various links on this webpage which guide you appropriately on what to do before and after the job offer.

RileyGuide.com – This is one other website with awesome information on negotiation tips, the topic demands more in-depth research and practice too – not an easy topic so the best is to take-in such informative tips from such valuable resources.

Career Path from Chef to Head Chef

The culinary arts present exciting opportunities to pursue creative work while also building a prestigious career. Top chefs gain notoriety for their signature style in some of the most exclusive restaurants around the world. Some have even become celebrities through their own television shows, cookbooks, and line of gourmet products. However, the rise to top chef is not a direct line, and there are many steps up the ladder of success. A typical path to success after culinary school looks something like this:
