  • Networking is an ongoing process.Network and aim to diversify the group you interact with.   • Document your successes.Whatever project you work on today, keep on writing and updating about your accomplishments in a separate detailed “resume” or call it your portfolio.   • You don’t really need that MBA.A higher degree in education or an MBA does not necessarily mean that it will make you smarter. Offer taking up project responsibilities for your colleagues / co-workers who wish to go on vacation. Being a team player and a good colleague has its value and who knows when you have to take a vacation or a break and then you might not need to even ask for a cover-up, the offer will come before you can ask.   • Avoid office politics.It never helps anyone, if you do your job well and right, there is nothing else you should spend your time at in office. There is a wonderful life outside of the cubicle – use your energy there rather than on useless politics.

Why do Women need Mentoring?

I can’t stress enough how important mentoring is to achieving success in one’s career,” says Sharon Allen, Chairman of Deloitte & Touche USA LLP. She credits the mentors she’s had in her career with helping her enter the small club of high-ranking women executives.

A key mentor for her was the managing partner in Deloitte’s Boise, Idaho, office where she worked early on in her career. “He would give me a little bit of additional confidence by standing by me and giving me that nudge to assure me I was doing the right thing,” she explains. “As I developed in my career and moved along up the ladder, I established new connections with people I felt were looking out for me.”

The lack of female role models, she adds, continues to hinder advancement for women, so women find themselves “establishing their own way and styles that work for them, and as a result, the additional reinforcement from a mentor is useful.”

One study of more than 500 executives in the health care industry found that mentors can lead to money and power.

“We discovered that women with mentors received more promotions than men,” says Anne M. Walsh, associate professor in the management department at Philadelphia’s La Salle University.

“In our study, the mentors provided access to promotional opportunities, which ultimately affected compensation,” she explains. “Mentors raised the visibility of these women in the organization, and helped them to develop the skills for these promotions. Mentors are also instrumental in providing feedback about job performance (e.g. act as a coach) and help women develop the skills that are required to compete in the job market.”

Mentoring is an effective means that helps women get the much needed promotions and to break through the glass ceiling. Women usually find it hard to compete with men especially when on the higher rungs of the corporate ladder, the upper management in most industries being male dominated at present. A Mentor to Mentor

I have this firm belief, no matter how old we are, having a mentor, a trusted teacher or partner in our lives can help us in clarifying our path, our lives.

When you talk to someone at your wavelength or understanding, it is not a mere exchange of ideas, it is expanding your horizons. Maybe going somewhere you never thought was possible.

Most certainly, I believe in having God as a constant partner too. “Practice believing that God is as real and actual as your wife, or your business partner, or your closest friend. Practice talking matters over with him; believe that He hears and gives thoughts to your problems. Assume that He impresses upon your mind through consciousness the proper ideas and insights necessary to solve your problems. Definitely believe that in these solutions there will be no error, but you will be guided to actions according to truth which results in right outcomes.” (Norman Vincent Peale)

Couple your faith and discussions that you have with God with a mentor or a trusted wise partner and that, I believe, can give infallible solutions to your questions and problems.
